Koetsenruijter arable farm, located in the Noordoostpolder, partially switched to organic farming seven years ago, including some of its seed potatoes. Koetsenruijter grows several challenging potato varieties, such as Markies. Previously, these potatoes were sprayed twice, topped, and then sprayed again. "Previously, it took six weeks before we could even begin harvesting; with haulm pulling, we can harvest after just four weeks. Markies is a variety that you can only harvest late in the season. Because haulm pulling allows us to harvest two weeks earlier, we have a better chance of making this variety a success." Koetsenruijter explains that they cleverly adapt to difficult-to-grow varieties by combining light and easy-to-harvest soil with haulm pulling. They want to take on the challenge of achieving a good yield from these varieties.
